Town flag at half mast today for the passing of a Mayor

The flag is flying at half mast at the County Hall museum for Peter Spooner, an ex-Mayor of Abingdon.

He came to Abingdon with the RAF in the 1950s and made Abingdon his home. After leaving the service, he became an MG worker and then ran a newsagent and confectionary business with his wife at 129 Ock Street for 18 years until retirement. Those were the days when people popped into the newsagent for a paper and had a five-minute chat, so Peter must have known a lot about the town.

He was elected as a town councillor from 1983 – 1989 for the Ock Ward and became the Mayor of Abingdon from 1987-88.

He was often seen at town events and loved the town and its people. There is a blog picture of him on the Market Place in 2009 at https://abingdonblog.co.uk/?p=238.

He also loved his garden and sent me these pictures in May 2012 to celebrate the Spring.

Details of the funeral are on the Town Council website https://www.abingdon.gov.uk/news/former-mayor-peter-spooner. With condolences to Peter’s family and friends.
