There have been traffic signals on Abingdon Bridge for a couple of weeks as one of the arches needs repairing.
Looking down stream there are rounded arches.
On the other side are some older looking arches.
From Elizabeth Drury & Judith Thomas’s book More of Abingdon Past & Present, I see the bridge was built in 1416, first widened in 1820, and a major reconstruction took place in 1929 when the navigation arch was made wider.
The signs the Abingdon side of the bridge are particularly fine, with a no traffic light sign and a traffic light sign in close proximity (I know what they are getting at but still).
With both the bridge and the multi storey carpark disintegrating one might almost think a trend is developing
The ‘no lights’ sign (technically signal not in use) is to indicate that the lights at the permanent crossing by Costa are not operating; the ‘lights’ sign is for the temporary lights at the works themselves.
One local paper report suggested that work would take a year. That would take some traffic management!
Where is Dimmo-Smith when you need him?
Whistling “underneath the arches” as I read the article
