Weak Bridge

There have been traffic signals on Abingdon Bridge for a couple of weeks as one of the arches needs repairing.

Looking down stream there are rounded arches.

On the other side are some older looking arches.

From Elizabeth Drury & Judith Thomas’s book More of Abingdon Past & Present, I see the bridge was built in 1416, first widened in 1820, and a major reconstruction took place in 1929 when the navigation arch was made wider.

Morning Rush Hour on Bridge Street

Morning Rush Hour
On the bridge over the River Thames in Abingdon, during morning rush hour, there was a green bus with a message of peace and goodwill from Muhammad,
Morning Rush Hour
O mankind spread peace and feed people’ .
Morning Rush Hour
A little way behind was a Baskervilles van (fruit and veg from Radley Road, Abingdon), and an Autoglass van.

New Barber’s Sign and New Poetry Forum on Bridge Street

New Barber
On Bridge Street the barber has a new sign and the new name of ‘Istanbul Barber’. While one customer is having a white shave, another customer is having a hot towel. Both appear to be in different parts of Aladdin’s cave and between them is the Bosphorus Bridge at night. Looks a good Movie!
New Barber
Over the road the Broad Face pub has been closed for a couple of months, and somebody has started to use the blackboard as a poetry forum. The first poem is about a man buying a pig at Abingdon Market and has an amusing ending. I look forward to reading more.
