Warm weather

There is no planet B
There have been three warm sunny days in Abingdon. It has started to feel like Spring is here a bit early. The sky looked so blue over the Guildhall and the new grass so green on Roysse Court. Which reminds me it is Guildhall Open weekend 10:00am to 6:00pm.
There is no planet B
More sunshine making a dazzle at Abingdon Bridge.

Some school children arrived back in Abingdon late in the afternoon, with a placard, after their school strike and big protest march in Oxford about the future of the planet. Looking at the reports there could have been 1500 taking part in Oxford, one of 60 marches. One slogan read ‘There is no Planet B’.

I have just got back from town and was heartened to see how many people – mainly families – were out and about even though it wasn’t sunny. Loads of people down by the river, walking, cycling, running – and litter-picking (!). Then plenty of people around town too. Despite all the doom-mongers it seems we still have a town centre worth visiting.

Well said, Hester. Lovely pix of the sunshine. Backstreeter gives us a wonderful positive blog, telling it like it is and not avoiding the controversial bits. And yet almost every blog attracts spiteful gripes and complaints about matters many of them important but not connected to the blog.
I suggest that only comments directly connected to the blog be allowed, and that Backstreeter sets up a weekly page for moaners and whingers, where they can moan and whinge all they like without my having to click on it.

It does not need to be Backstreeter, not is it incumbent on him to do so. Any of the commentators on this site could set up a blog to complain about the town.

That being said, Backstreeter has the facility to delete off-topic comments, but chooses not to do so, so presumably he is happy with the btl comments.

Wow a minute – back the truck up ! The moaners ( me among them ) aren’t just hell bent on promoting anarchy and discord, quite the contrary, we well know the attributes and potential of this amazing town, in fact most of us moaners have lived here or were born here way before the protagonists who think they know what’s best for Abingdon even knew about Abingdon and just because our ambition/potential for the town doesn’t fit with the “ newcomers” ideas we get lambasted!
So for all you alien speaking doo Gooders who do more harm than good why don’t you clear off back to where you came from ( if they’ll have you?) and leave Abingdon to /Abingdonians

Horsesmouth raises (once again!) one of my favourite debating points: why is it that someone who has lived and worked for nearly 50 years – virtually all their adult life – in the town and who chose to live here, rather than being here by accident of birth, deemed to be less worthy than, for example, a 30-year-old who was born here, but works elsewhere, shops elsewhere and cares little about the town?
Or perhaps he means only people of a certain age?

It’s that kind of censorship, or sweeping under the carpet John that has led the country to the sorry state it is in.

Confront and challenge, rather than pretend it doesn’t exist is far better.

Having said that, quite what your post has to do with kids skipping school; I don’t know…

Fully agree Hester – funnily enough as an incomer (albeit 25 years ago – and with three kids who have lived here all their lives – maybe Steve wouldn’t count them either as two were born in Wallingford Maternity Unit and one in the JR) I pay my Community Taxes just the same as him and therefore have just as much right to comment on the way this money is spent

I can almost hear the Royston Vasey accent: “We’ll have no alien speaking doo (sic) – Gooders here! This is a local blog for local people!”

Hester – Great to hear that people were doing some impromptu litter picking – let’s hope it’s contagious!

I agree – we have a lovely town and we’re doing better than many others.
