St Nicolas Day

Thanks to Captainkaos2 for these pictures. He says …
St Nicolas School Day
Today was Saint Nicolas day for St Nicolas School in Abingdon.
St Nicolas School Day
Much fun was had as school children lined the road to welcome Saint Nicolas in his horse drawn carriage to the school.

This is an old school tradition. It was last featured on this blog for St Nicolas Day 2009.

Can anyone nominate the road with the best Christmas lights this year? We’re planning an evening walk and want to capture the best displays on our route. In previous years Saxton Road and Medlicott Close have had some impressive lights, but there may be some out there not to be missed!

I notice whilst in town today that the doors into Poundland have been smashed again, I can’t remember where but I’m sure other businesses have been targeted of late. Wasn’t the cctv installed to stop or minimise this kind of thing.

St Nicolas always used to have two assistants known as Black Peters, and he always rode a white horse. Today, I note from your picture, he has white Peters and not one but two black horses.

Ah john you refer to pre P C times, not even allowed to post photos of the children enjoying the occasion ! Bonkers or what ?

I agree it’s a shame happy children cannot have photos shown, but, very sadly, there are children for whom it could be dangerous for their faces to spread across social media. Nice though to see an old tradition continuing.

Why can you not show children? You don’t have to go very far back in this blog to find plenty of photos of children enjoying various public events. I appreciate that there are a tiny handful of children who do need protection and you might occasionally be asked not to take or publish their picture, but in general a child in public can have their photo taken the same as anyone else.

Agree Ben, but at every school event, sports day, school play etc parents & co are told quite categorically not to post any photos on social media, hence no children in my pics here, I suppose another angle is photos posted on social media can also be doctored and posted on by bully’s and the like?

Any fool can manipulate a digital image these days; unfortunately, this means that some sick souls do – and they damage the innocent.

Thanks to Backstreeter for giving us such a rich and careful selection of photographs each week.

The difference BenW between a public event and a school event is that the latter would enable an inappropriate person, maybe an abusive parent as an example, to pinpoint exactly where a child goes to school. A public event only gives the possibility, if that, of a child living somewhere in that area. Sad, but true.
