Boundary House Revamp

Boundary House Revamp
The owners of the Boundary House pub, in North Abingdon, have not barricaded themselves against an invasion of football fans from the Northcourt (Abingdon United’s home just over the road). They are just having a revamp, and will be re-opening on Friday the 13th May 2016.

Two doors down at 65 Oxford Road the land has been transferred from Orchard Developments to a new owner and development is now well underway. I believe that a condition of this particular development is that any trees chopped down, before the transfer, are replaced by new planting.

P.S. Thanks to Helen for sending a picture of the new sign at the Boundary House.

A friend and I used to meet and have a meal in the Boundary House and it used to be nice. However, we went there at Christmas and it had changed and was awful. The tables had been taken out and high bar tables had been put in. It looked very rough so we abandoned it quick and went on to the Spread Eagle. They were doing a nice Christmas Meal and had proper tables to eat from.

From pictures on their Facebook page, been completely gutted. New Bar area, seating. Redecorated. Some really impressive wallpaper of VED/Tax Discs, and MG car parts (springs/steering wheel). Yet to be carpeted…Our Phab club is going to eat there on Thursday 19th May.

Janet, the Boundary House has plenty of ‘normal’ tables, the high ones were only around the pool table at the top end.
It has a bad reputation as a “rough” pub but is in fact quite a nice family pub and has a 5 star hygiene rating. Just avoid Friday and Saturday night when like most pubs you get the young brigade.

Many of us oldies have very fond memories of the BH way back in the 70s when it was a “real” pub – a fraction of the size it is now, no food except crisps – and peanuts on the bar, Sunday lunchtime. Off-sales from a little window in the hallway and a seriously miserable ex-cop called George as the landlord who was particularly anti the “layabouts” – mostly science graduates – from nearby Rush Commin Hostel. Ah, those were the days!

We stayed loyal through several extensions/refurbishments and even more landlords, before giving up and decamping to the Spread in the 90s. MG memorabilia might make it worth a return visit.

BH is a shadow of its former self but the Spread, despite enlargement, retains much of its ’60s/’70s character.
Many of those ‘layabouts’ from Rush Common are probably now either still Hippies or Captains of Industry !
BH and the ‘Mucky Duck’ (Spread Eagle) were always in good competition in the ’60s. I remember having to make a weekly decision either to buy a half-pint round or some more petrol for my motorbike on leaving the All Saints Yoof Club in the adjacent Church Hall. (At least it was 4 gallons for a Pound then)

Please, please don’t let all those TV screens get re-installed. Some ok, but maybe in a separate room and leave the rest of the pub for others to enjoy.

Houdini, bigger screens installed. Has anyone experienced their Christmas Meal 2016??, Phab Club is considering it as a possible Venue.
