Ten years ago, there was a magnificent chestnut tree next to the Ladygrove Meadow playpark.
I would guess it was cut down about five years ago. It had started to rot, and the hollow inside was getting bigger. Branches were probably getting dangerous.
Passing that way on Sunday I stopped to look at the clusters of fungus.
and noticed how boring insects had made some areas as soft as Balsa Wood.
I’ve seen this tree for many years, and was so sorry to see it cut like that . However it does provide a wonderful ecosystem now.
The Chestnut tree was a great loss, but the meadow beside the river Ock is a pleasant asset to South Abingdon, being part of the Ock Valley walk.
Also the play park remains, for the enjoyment of the children, whilst the more energetic parents might like to work out on the outdoor gym!
