We are nearing the end of the 2014 season for The Abingdon Boat Centre.
Another boat is guided back into position at the end of a fun day.
In another couple of week the boats will be stacked on the oil drums for the off season.
Schools are back. On Monday, in Oxfordshire, there was an inset day for teachers. There is much to learn as the primary curriculum is having a radical shake up as the UK tries to emulate the world’s highest achieving schools. Details of the curriculum are on The School Run. Some quick headlines … Computing replaces ICT, with a greater focus on programming. Calculators will not be introduced until near the end of KS2, to encourage mental arithmetic. A language will become mandatory in KS2.
By today, Thursday 4th September, all the pupils had gone back for the year 2014/15.
Computing including programming, what language do they use now?, in my days they used something they called CESIL (Computer Education for Schools in Languages).
I work with IT, (emphasis on with), every time we had work experience from secondary schools, the amount of people putting Web Page design or Games Design as their IT interests.
Way back when didn’t it used to be CLAIT (Computer Learning and Information Technology)?
You should be so lucky, we had the three R’s, Rubella, Rickets and Ringworm, how times have changed.
I went to the Bodleian Library this week to view a small exhibition of a selection from the Literary Archive of Alan Bennett. He has donated all of his papers and literary materials to the library.
Interestingly, he entire literary output of books and plays was produced by Bennett using a fountain pen and paper. He continues to do so and it was wonderful to see his handwritten annotations.
I wonder if we shall produce a generation who will be unable to write by hand? Certainly I have met people who cannot read easily documents which are written in cursive script or ‘loopy’ handwriting.
N.B. apologies for the typos – (I blame predictive text!!!!). I am a lifelong ‘handwriter’…..fountain pen and all.
It’s all progress. Computers have also brought us the paperless office as well as allow us to spend less time at work and more time with our families.
Paperless office? Spend less time at work? Mmmm can I come and work in your office?
Houdini, for you I fear…there’s no escape…
Mmm ….. yes seem to be a bit tied up 🙂
Paperless Office from IT?, In our Office, raising an electronic ticket produces forms in Triplicate/Quadlicate?? (3 or 4 carbon copies). Hard copies still needed record Terms and Conditions and Auditing purposes… also guarantees,
You know, IT even allows you to now find out exactly what the weather is like, right now, outside your window. I mean really, like, right now. They really are amazing!
Remember…always fold your cheques…. î„…;)
