The new youtube video by local group alphabet backwards is shot in Abingdon. They often stop off for a drink at Thowing Buns – and so Throwing Buns gets featured.

The new song ‘Taller’ will be available on an EP fom 28th November 2011: CD, 7″ and Download. But for now you can watch it on youtube and see what parts of Abingdon you recognise.

Recent changes in the Abbey Shopping Centre

The Christmas Shop has opened but no longer has the days to Christmas counter in the window. So I have to go to the Nursery Shop blog to see there are 48 sleeps to go. With Halloween behind us businesses are gearing up for the festive season. On the other side of the precinct there is now a Calendar Club shop.

However, Azuri are looking less than festive and have looked empty for a couple of weeks now. Meanwhile the community shop had Age UK last week, and Citizens Advice this week.

Scout Fireworks – November 5th 2011

Each year a different anniversary seems to be celebrated at the 2nd Abingdon Scout fireworks at Long Furlong Community Centre. The 15th time of running the event coincided with 25 years of Beavers.

The gates opened at 6:30 and the fireworks started at about 7:30. A large crowd gathered mostly inside, but some people watch from outside. Inside children played with light sabers, and somebody was running about in a beaver costume to amuse the mostly young crowd. Burgers, and hot dogs, and other refreshments were on sale. I think a young lass called Lucy pushed the plunger after the customary 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 countdown, and set off the first rocket. Janet Morgan given the Freedom of Abingdon

Janet Morgan
Janet Morgan was given the Freedom of the Town of Abingdon in a special ceremony this morning. She is a past Mayor who during her year as Mayor, 1988, started up the Clubs and Societies Day – which is still running. Next one will be April 21st.
Janet Morgan
She was a town councillor starting in 1983, district councillor starting in 1987 and ending in 2011 (and leader of the council from 1995-97 during which time she helped set up the youth forum), and county councillor (and Lib-Dem education spokesman for several years). As an ex-teacher she has been a governor at 3 schools and still is actively involved at John Mason. She joins a small select group of men who have been given the Freedom of the Town, the highest civic honour the town has to offer.
