Sad news in the window

Sad news in the window of Established, the Hairdressers on Stert Street ….
Abingdon Lido
One of their hairdessers died suddenly 30-6-2011. Ian was a gentle guy who took meticulous care cutting hair.

The other staff have added the message “Always in out thoughts”.

New Abingdon Spa

Abingdon Lido
At West Waddy , the architects at 60 East St Helen Street, until Thursday from 1pm – 4pm, there is an exhibition of the work of student architects from Brookes University.  It is a well presented exhibition in a beautiful riverside building.

The brief  for architectural students was to design a Lido and Spa in Abingdon  for the 21st Century.
Abingdon Lido
The Abingdon Open Air Pool / Lido has survived when many others have closed after their heyday before the 1970s. The brief asked students to cater for “contemporary society, in particular the young and families. It should accommodate the early morning serious swimmer, the lunchtime and after work swimmer, school groups, weekend families, summer tourists,

evening socialisers,  and winter enthusiasts.”
Abingdon Lido
The exhibiton showed a range of work – all very creative and theoretical but I am not sure it will give SOLL leisure – who currently run the pool – many practical ideas to help make the pool a more popular venue.
Abingdon Lido
The winning design showed a glass bottomed pool projecting out towards the river and fields beyond.

Update on Revd. Paul and Revd. Richard

Army Day
The Revd. Paul Smith of St. Michael’s and St. Nicolas celebrated 10 years of ordination in style at St. Michaels.  (Thanks to John for the picture).

Meanwhile at Trinity we were very glad to welcome back Revd. Richard who has been quite seriously ill. Revd Richard will hopefully be back to full strength and leading worship from September.

Armed Forces Open Day

At the Armed Forces Open Day, there were a lot of stalls and information displays – some from the local community like Waitrose giving away lots of freebies, and some from the army giving the local community an insight into army life.
Army Day
(Thanks to Iain for sending the picture of the smoke above and the one of rifle practise below). He says… ” There was a fantastic demonstration from the 12th Logistic Support Regiment, who have recently returned from active service in Helmund Province, of the sort of tactical maneuvers they are required to deploy in the field. The crowd were clearly impressed, with the close proximity of the smoke canisters adding to the experience, and expressed their appreciation by joining in with a chorus of ‘happy birthday’ for Private … who has just participated in the exercise.
Army Day
My children were particularly excited by the opportunities to practice some of the martial arts, past and present. They loved the archery and the chance to become a sniper and fire a gun with ‘real bullets’.

Army Day
There were also cuddly animals,
Army Day
amusements like these human hamster balls
Army Day
and the archery Iain mentioned.
Army Day
Thanks to the regiments at Dalton Barracks for another well organised event. Every accident was well planned. Money raised went to army charities.
