Armed Forces Open Day

At the Armed Forces Open Day, there were a lot of stalls and information displays – some from the local community like Waitrose giving away lots of freebies, and some from the army giving the local community an insight into army life.

(Thanks to Iain for sending the picture of the smoke above and the one of rifle practise below). He says… ” There was a fantastic demonstration from the 12th Logistic Support Regiment, who have recently returned from active service in Helmund Province, of the sort of tactical maneuvers they are required to deploy in the field. The crowd were clearly impressed, with the close proximity of the smoke canisters adding to the experience, and expressed their appreciation by joining in with a chorus of ‘happy birthday’ for Private … who has just participated in the exercise.

My children were particularly excited by the opportunities to practice some of the martial arts, past and present. They loved the archery and the chance to become a sniper and fire a gun with ‘real bullets’.

There were also cuddly animals,

amusements like these human hamster balls

and the archery Iain mentioned.

Thanks to the regiments at Dalton Barracks for another well organised event. Every accident was well planned. Money raised went to army charities.

Well done to all concerned – fantastic day out and in a very good cause and a great advert for the important work the armed services do on our behalf.

A particular thanks from me to the shooting instructor who was so patient with my (and many other) kids. He was well into his 8 hour shift when it was our turn, and I know he’d come straight there having been on duty for 24 hours straight.

I personally found the picture of a girl sniper of primary school age rather worrying.

I miss your comment about hitting an ice cream van with a machine gun. That is something I would happily do.

Sorry I edited this piece after getting Ian’s pictures which were good. Before then there was a picture of a powerful gun that we were told could fire up to 1800 metres. I was looking down the barrel with a group of people in range and the caption was “This gun could hit an ice cream van at 1800 metres.”

The reason I said that was I had just pulled the latch back ready to shoot. I then said “There is nothing here I want to shoot”.

Somebody behind said “What about the Ice Cream van?”

    So was that you?

No, that wasn’t me. I can’t stand the noise from ice cream vans. It is so nice when they stop in the winter. I thought the displays of army kit interesting although there seemed to be fewer displays than last year. I would like to have had a go at being a sniper but I would have to queue up with the children.
