The Easter holiday starts this weekend and children have two weeks off from 6th – 22nd April. Abingdon’s new cinema, The Abbey, will be screening some new, family-friendly films: Missing Link and Peppa Pig’s Festival of Fun. The Dumbo film should also be on soon.

In the animated film Missing Link, Myths and monsters investigator, Sir Lionel Frost, sets off on an adventure to the Pacific Northwest to prove the existence of a legendary creature – Mr. Link.

Peppa Pig is celebrating 15 years of entertaining children and there will be ten brand new episodes, making up an hour for little ones to spend with Peppa and her family.

Then coming soon is Dumbo 2019.

Ian Wiper, Managing Director says: “Dumbo is the first of several fantastic live action Disney remakes to look forward to this year, along with Aladdin and the Lion King. The ticket demand has already been huge.”

As well as the Passion Play this Saturday at 2pm, there is also the Abingdon Horticultural Society Spring Show from 2pm until 4pm. The entrance fee for non members is £1. There will be a plant stall and refreshments will be available.

Members compete in classes for Spring Flowers, Baking, Photographs and  Handicrafts, and there is a special section for young people to enter a range of exhibits.

Helen sent a poster to remind people of the next litter pick by the River Thames on Saturday 13th April. That should make things tidy for the big Sunday 14th April, featuring: Abingdon Head of the River Rowing, The Thames at War 1940s Day at the Lock, and the Eighth Abingdon Cycle Festival.

Abingdon library had recycling wheels when I was in last Friday. They make it easier for people to check which bin waste items should go in which bin.

There is also a smartphone app called Binzone to tells people which bin to put out and what to put in what bin. The recycling wheel and app are intended to improve recycling rates and have been created by the South and Vale councils.

April Theme Day – Yellow (once grey)

My entry for the City Daily Photo theme day of yellow is speed camera. The one pictured above is sited just before John Mason school, in Abingdon, where there are also speed bumps, on the Wooton Road.

When speed cameras were introduced in Abingdon back in 1992 they were grey. A change in the law in 2001 meant speed cameras were given a yellow vinyl sheet to ensure they can be seen.

There are four fixed speed cameras in Abingdon – all yellow:
Drayton Road – 30 MPH
A4183 – Oxford Road – 30 MPH
Wooton Road – 30 MPH
Audlett drive – 40 MPH

Speed cameras use radar technology to measure how fast a vehicle is travelling and to trigger the camera to take two photos in quick succession. A powerful flash will illuminate the registration plate. It is rear facing so as not to blind drivers. There are also white calibration lines (5mph apart) on the roads surface. So there are two forms of detection: radar, and calibration.

The Abingdon Artists’ Spring Exhibition started today, Monday, 1st April, and runs to Saturday, 6th April (10:00am-4:30pm) at St Nicolas Church.

The exhibition includes a wide range of art works by different Abingdon artists. A number of them will also be exhibiting with other groups during Oxfordshire Art Weeks in May.

As well as the exhibition and the chance to buy framed and unframed works, and cards, there is a raffle. First prize is a painting of the Ridgeway.

Sally Mears is a well known local musician who has been helping with the music for the Abingdon Passion Play this Saturday. She also had a picture in the exhibition on the same subject.
