First Phase of Christmas Lights
Some Christmas Lights are already on in Abingdon. In Bury Street the lights were put up last night and turned on without ceremony. The rest of the town’s lights were put up last week and will get turned on at the Extravaganza. This two phase turn on is quite normal for Abingdon where the company running Bury Street do their own thing.

The Book Store has got some reindeer and snow to make the window festive. Other shops in Bury Street are also looking festive.

Make Music Abingdon
At the Old Magistrate Court this afternoon there were three artists performing for the November edition of Make Music Abingdon. It was all free but you could make a donation to Make Music Abingdon who bring live music to Abingdon.

The Abingdon Magistrates Court has better acoustics than any other room in the Guildhall, thanks to its wood panelling.

There were three performers this afternoon.

At the end of the afternoon they were set a challenge and asked to choose and perform one song together, with no rehearsal.

Individually they all performed their own music and it was very good. Brodie is a singer/songwriter based in Abingdon. Nikki is from Oxfordshire but could have been from Nashville. The Hex Collective are a guitar/cello duo who perform songs based on words collected a century ago.

Collectively they chose a song about Chicago. Thank you to Make Music Abingdon for continuing to put on live music in Abingdon, even without Sam who must be sadly missed.

The water level of the River Ock in Abingdon has been high over the last couple of days and looks to be going down.

A rubbish bin is surrounded by water in the Abbey Meadow as the water level of the River Thames gets higher with the Abingdon Weir gates wide open.

There have been pictures on this blog of boats that have come to grief during floods. There are three narrow boats moored between Abingdon Lock and Abingdon Bridge. Two have long ropes.

The third is moored next to the lock entrance.

On Saturday the water had risen over the banks in various places over this stretch of Rye Farm Meadow.

By Sunday the Thames Path at Rye Farm Meadow was only passable with extreme care.

On Dry Land in Abingdon this Saturday

In St Helen’s Church centre the Friend’s of Abingdon Community Hospital held their AGM and raffle draw. The big prize was a Miele Vacuum cleaner. There were lots of other prizes. Wyn, seated nearest the camera, was delighted to be taking back a prize to a neighbour to whom she sold the ticket.

In St Ethelwold’s House the Abbey Artists have an exhibition this weekend. I got talking to Dougie Simpson who does those lovely pictures of Abingdon that are sketched painting with outlines in pen and ink.

On the Market Place the Kennington Memory Club had a stall. The Alzheimer’s Club in Abingdon closed down, and Kennington have taken over running a day centre with activities.

Ian, of the Oxford Waits, was busking in Bury Street. The Oxford Waits had a successful sell-out concert at the Unicorn Theatre last night. I am told there was a great atmosphere. I got there with ten minutes to spare. The man at the door said to the couple ahead of me ‘You are lucky. Two tickets left.‘ Then told me, ‘Sorry! Sold out.‘
