At Abingdon-on-Thames Guildhall Theatre this afternoon, The National Clown Theatre gave a performance to a young audience.

For, possibly, a more adult audience, out of bounds comedy is coming on the last Thursday of every month. They already have a regular circuit and are adding Abingdon as a new venue.

All part of the new Guildhall Events and Entertainment programme which I see includes performances by tribute bands: The Beatles on 23rd March, Amy Winehouse on 27th April, and Abba on 25th May, and cookery demonstrations / performances.

Nearby are big photographs of soldiers and civilians in Helmand Province. This is the exhibition “Shooting on the Front Line: One soldier’s war in Afghanistan” at Abingdon Museum which ends this week.

Meanwhile on the top floor there is the “Abingdon salutes its service personnel” special exhibition.  20 years have gone by since RAF Abingdon became Dalton Barracks.

RAF Abingdon opened on 1st September 1932 and closed on 31st July 1992. Many people will remember it’s Battle of Britain at Home Days that attracted big crowds.

Since when it has been an army base, with lots of army children coming to Abingdon Schools, and community organisations like Abingdon Town Amateur Boxing Club using army facilities.

As well as special exhibitions the museum has talks. This evening Don Hayter, chief designer of the MGB, was talking about the MGB at Fifty. This coming Saturday there is an Abingdon ARP Warden telling us what life was like in Word War II “Put that Light Out!”. Call 01235 523703 to book a place.

Last night the there was a wedding fair at the Guildhall. Local businesses taking part included Frend & Co the jeweller, Added Ingredients, and Pure Marie (est 1936). Thanks to them for the picture. They said the wedding fair was very well organised and they enjoyed taking part.

The Guildhall is promoting itself as a wedding venue, and by the spring, when the architect has put together the first set of drawings we will see how it could offer a cinema. Marie used to be located next to the Regal cinema in Abingdon.
