One pub that seems to be thriving since The Narrows opened is The Grapes – just over the road. The Grapes normally seems to have some sort of sport playing on the big screens. But what struck me yesterday is the new pub sign.

The Nags Head written in Roof Tiles
“The Nags Head” is written in the roof tiles above the pub – after the recent roof job.

New Nag’s Head Pub Sign and Live Pub Music
A new pub sign is being put up at the Nag’s Head on the Thames. The painted sign will replace the faded print that was there before.
We popped down to the Nags Head on Sunday to hear George Haslam and his jazz ensemble.
George played Baritone Sax, and was accompanied by excellent musicians on Alto Sax, Flugal Horn, Keyboard, Double Base, and Drums.

There was an article in the Herald not long ago with Reg from the Gainsborough Green shop concerned that a Tesco or similar shop would be taking over the Saxton Arms.
Those plans, for a shop at the Saxton Arms, have now been withdrawn, and new plans submitted for 4 x one bed and 1 x two bed apartments with associated car parking.
That means that both the pubs taken over by Hawthorn Leisure Ltd from Greene King in 2014 – the Saxton Arms and the Cross Keys, could now be used as housing. Hawthorn Leisure Ltd did try running them both as pubs for a few months before closing them for a more profitable use
