We Plough the Fields and Scatter

At Trinity yesterday we had the annual Harvest Festival. Most of the food donations were loaded into a car and taken to ‘Asylum Welcome’ – who need all the food they can get. Refugee numbers are up because of the war in Syria.

Rev’d Richard said there had been a good harvest this year with a wet spring followed by a dry summer.

Round the church were far more flowers than usual as part of a Harvest Flower Festival. Each display had a text … “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They toil not, neither do they spin, and yet I say unto you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.”

Walking in fields yesterday, after the service, we saw Maize in abundance.

But for the UK inshore fleet – fishing boats mostly under 10 metres in length which operate in coastal waters – fish stocks are at historically low levels.

Turkey Tasting at Peachcroft Farm

Turkey Tasting
Thanks to Iain for some pictures of one of his families favorite annual events. Iain says “This year’s turkey tasting was bigger and better than ever. The kids loved meeting their Christmas dinner – who were all in good voice and enjoying their straw bale perches.”

The spread included “Delicious turkey, ham, goose and smoke salmon, not to mention a fantastic range of cheeses and cakes from Wells Stores.”

Abingdon County Hall Museum Cake

County Hall Museum Cake
There was a goodbye event for Lauren, the museum curator, who finishes on Wednesday. About 60 people attended a reception to thank her for all she has done for the museum. There were speeches by the Town Clerk, and the Chair of the Abingdon County Hall Museum Committee, and a very moving speech by Lauren herself. Then a magnificent cake was unveiled –  made by Elizabeth Mergel (www.cakesbylizmergel.com) who supplies cakes for Throwing Buns.
