Open Day at The Vet

Open Day at The Vet
I tried to imagine what Open Day at The Vet would be like beforehand. The signs had been up for some time in front of the Boundary Veterinary Centre on the Oxford Road in Abingdon. And so when TODAY arrived I went to find out.
Open Day at The Vet
I imagined that it would be a chance to look round the treatment rooms and talk to the vets. There was a little bit of that.

But mostly it was about some of the animal charities the vets and their receptionists support.

The Cats Protection League were there with some of their cats and kittens.

They also had a stall.

There was an information board for another Charity called IAPWA (International Aid for the Protection of Animal).

Some people brought their dogs and were relaxing with Tea and Cakes, or having a go on the raffle or other stalls.

There were also two sheep, and a ferret.

So it was partly a chance to look round the clinic, and partly a fete raising money and awareness for animal charities.

World Cup cup cakes and Two Town Criers

World Cup Cupcakes
The World Cup Cupcake stall opened outside Cancer Research UK at 10 am this morning and were almost sold out when I visited an hour later.
World Cup Cupcakes
Just a few cakes left to show.

Due to an administrative error there were two Town Criers about in town today.

As far as I know they were never both in the same place at the same time, and did not come to blows. Their duties included announcing:

  • The Queen’s birthday
  • Market Place Craft Fair
  • Carswell School Fete
  • Lace Making demo in the museum attic.

Abingdon Traditional Morris Dancer Gives up Beer
The Deputy Bag Man of the Abingdon Traditional Morris Dancers is giving up Beer and Coffee and will be only drinking water for the next two weeks to raise money for the Royal National Lifeboat institution. He has managed the first day, but it is going to be a tough challenge. Sponsorship will encourage him to last the next two weeks with no beer or coffee – H2OOnly.

The old premises were looking in need of a major refurbishment and that is what they will now get as they are converted to luxury apartments.
