Guide Dogs Week is the annual fundraising, awareness building week which runs from 4 to 12 October.
Guide Dogs were out in number this morning in Abingdon Town Centre, despite the rain. The one on the left was injured a couple of days ago by a bicycle on a shared walkway. Such accidents are becoming more common, and the owners wanted people to be aware that cycles are not always heard until it is too late.
Also there is a campaign to get talking buses, ones that announce the stops, so that visually impaired people don’t miss their stop.
We took an author into two Abingdon schools this week – and a guide dog came along too. Richard (who was escorting the dog) told the children all about assistance dogs. I think as adults we all think we ‘know’ about this stuff, but it’s good to be reminded occasionally…
Richard and his dog came to Abingdon Prep too last school year. The boys raised loads of money for the Guide Dogs, Hearing Dogs and Medical Detection Dogs charities over the year.
Cyclists (of whom I am one) are supposed to have bells. Unfortunately, not all do and not all who have them sound them in good time.
I hope the injured dog recovers quickly.
