Mark from Mostly Books picked up Colin Dexter from his house, and was regailed with witty stories in the car as he drove him to Abingdon. The stories continued on the stage at St Helen’s and Katherine School Hall before an audience who had come to hear an informal talk entitled ‘A Perfect Crime’ by the author of the Inspector Morse murder mystery stories.

But when after some chat Mark tried to guide the conversation towards the perfect crime, Colin changed the subject. Instead he read the worse letter he had ever received, followed by the best.

Colin Dexter used to teach Greek and Latin at a school in Leicester but was forced to give up the profession he loved by loss of hearing.

The secret to a perfect crime is to leave no clues – something incompatible with writing murder mysteries where the purpose is to leave a trail of clues and create a book.

Christmas Holidays extended …

On a walk to Culham and back I took a picture of a swan and then an almost grown cygnet at the old Culham bridge where Swift Ditch rejoins the Thames.

They paddled upstream at a steady pace, met up with a larger group of swans, and then paddled past.
Some people are preparing to go back to work after the Christmas break. Other people, working on essential / caring services, have never stopped.
The company I work for asks employees to save three of their annual holidays to use at this time of year – so that the company can close down for the week between the Christmas and New Year bank holidays. So I am now into extended Christmas Holiday.

As for swans, every day has its routine. They need to check out their territory, find food, and ward off any dangers, etc… That routine cannot be called either work or leisure. Swans don’t get holidays.

Happy pancake day

At St Helen’s Church centre the Rector served up American style pancakes to around 150 parishioners on Shrove Tuesday.
Happy pancake day to you all but have you decided what to give up for Lent?
