Cold start to the week but not cold enough for Ice Skating in Abingdon-on-Thames

Cold start to the week
There was a hard frost on both Saturday and Sunday morning, and this Monday morning temperatures were at -2C as people set off to work.

The big cooling towers of Didcot A coal Power Station have been demolished, but the more efficient Didcot B gas Power Station was working hard – its lower cooling towers creating clouds of vapour.

Flood pools had a film of ice but not thick enough for ice skating.

With a forecast of warmer days ahead, the possibility of ice skating in Abingdon looks remote. Later in the day the clouds cleared and temperatures reached 7C before cooling down by evening.

Sunday Sunshine

Sunshine
The bank holiday weekend continued on Sunday with more sunshine at Abingdon-on-Thames.

The Kings Head & Bell has been closed for refurbishment. It is a very old building and seems to need a lot of maintenance.

Other pubs were open and attracting visitors. The Nags Head had jazz and the Crown and Thistle had something much louder to entertain people who do not need to go to work on Monday.
Sunshine
There was an important ashes cricket match happening. In the past we could have watched matches like that on BBC or ITV  but, never mind, it was a lovely day and we could watch the highlights.

The sun was dazzling and it was a lovely day.

Look ahead to Saturday

The sign sitting on Park Road, ready for Abingdon School’s leavers ball, does show a degree of pessimism about the weather. (Thankyou to Iain for this.)

Let us hope that the Annual Rugby Sevens tournament on Saturday from 11am is not hit by snow.

and that the sun does shine on the Trinity Church Summer Fair.

The Local Excellence Market also happens on Saturday. This is a quarterly market where local food producers, craftworkers and retailers sell their goods on Abingdon Market Place. They are used to trading in all weathers: ice or sun.

Tracking Abingdon’s Snow

Tracking Abingdon Snow
This morning I identified some of the tracks in the snow that had been frozen overnight. What I think we have here are geese, dogs. and humans.

Morning sunshine soon raised temperatures from below zero and the snow and ice started to melt.

The frozen snow on the four quadrants of Abingdon Market Place also began to thaw.

There were lots of people about in Abingdon as it was a Saturday but that did not include the large group of runners normally to be seen drinking coffee after the Abingdon Park run. The Parkrun had been cancelled because of the slippery conditions, like the bin lorries were cancelled yesterday.

We dropped into the Guildhall to check how things were progressing. The Abbey Cinema had Mary Queen of Scots and Live Rugby: Ireland V England (a sell out event partnered with Loose Cannon Brewery).

The Guildhall has an open day in 2 weeks time to show off the other rooms after refurbishment (Roysse, Council Chamber, Abbey, and Bear Room). There will be displays and information about how they can cater for weddings etc.

By evening, on the Market Place, only the quadrant shaded by the County Hall was still under a cover of snow and ice.
