Football and Cricket together in Abingdon on a sunny 4th August

Football and Cricket
The Football Season began today at Abingdon Town Football Club. They played Woodley United in the Hellenic League Division One.

Abingdon are under new management and have brought in some exciting new signings.

Things did not start well. We got to the game a few minutes late, and in the time it took us to walk round the ground, and take our seats, Woodley United scored three times to make it 3-0. Their big number 9 burst through the Abingdon defence twice to score 2 of them. The other was a headed own goal.

However, going forward Abingdon Town looked very exciting, and within minutes they got one back and scored a penalty (pictured above). By half time it was 3-3.
Football and Cricket
At half time the reserves came out for a kick-about, as did a lot of youngsters from the youth club programme. We did not have to pay to get in but there was a bucket for contributions to the youth programme.

The second half saw three more excellent Abingdon Town goals. Woodley’s big number 9 also scored and hit the post. So it ended 6-4 to Abingdon.

My better half brought a book to read but only read one sentence. She enjoyed the game, and was shouting for Abingdon Town as she did for England not so long ago – during the World Cup. But she did hope the referee would show a red card to players for bad swearing.
Football and Cricket
Next door at Hales Meadow, Abingdon Vale Cricket Club also put in a good performance.
Football and Cricket
They beat Long Marston by 130 runs to 127.

It could have been 3-0 to England

Flags
Three flags flew in front of Abingdon County Hall at half time when England were leading Croatia 1-0. It could easily have been 2-0 or 3-0.

The run of play changed in the second half as Croatia got the upper hand. They scored to equalise, and scored again in extra time to take the lead.

The dream is over. Long live the dream! There is another world cup in 2022.

Outdoor Pool to re-open on 16th June after £1.3million rebuild

Outdoor Pool
The Vale of White Horse District Council will hold the official opening event of the rebuilt pool on the morning of 16th June and it will be open to the public from 1pm.
Outdoor Pool
The rebuild involved joining the infant pool and main pool into one large area. There is a gently sloping walk-in the pool with easy access for young children and for visitors with disabilities. There is also a deep water area for more experienced swimmers.
Outdoor Pool
The changing areas have also been fully refurbished.

The pool will be surrounded by a safe, non-slip rubber surface. Energy saving lighting and heating equipment will make the pool more efficient to run.

In a press release Councillor Charlotte Dickson, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: It’s so fantastic to see how this much-loved local pool has been transformed.

The council is appealing for people to send in old pictures of Abbey Meadow pool which could feature in a special picture display at the re-opening event. A free swim is on offer for anybody who submits a picture that is used in the display. For more details please contact communications@southandvale.gov.uk.
