Women’s World Day of Prayer

World Day of Prayer
The Women’s World Day of Prayer was began in America and Canada in the nineteenth century, and is now followed in over 170 countries, in over 1000 languages, all on the same day.

Each year the women of a different country prepare a theme, and in 2017 the service has been prepared by women of the Philippines. (2016 was Cuba, and 2018 will be Suriname.)

The Churches in Abingdon have been taking part for many years, and this year will join together at Abingdon Baptist Church for two versions of the service.

Everyone is welcome to attend either service.

Theme Day – Blank and White in Colour

The City Daily Photo theme day for the start of March is ‘Black and White in Colour’.

We cycled to Radley Lakes on Sunday and walked round Thrupp Lake and the fishing lake alongside.

There was not a lot of colour in the pictures taken across the lakes. Parts of Thrupp Lake appeared to have been colonised by black and white cormorants. The only colour came from unidentifiable orange blobs on their island.

Two swans were on the fishing lake alongside. The only colour was their beaks.

Looking directly into the sun across Thrupp Lake. The only colour was from a handkerchief of blue sky.

Behind Alison Clare

Energy Efficient
Down the narrow alleyway behind the Alison Clare Hair Studio, at the top of the Vineyard, there was once a 1970’s commercial building.

The building was last used commercially by a supplier of energy efficient boilers. It was also used, during the 2015 general election, as the HQ of the local Lib-Dems.

The building stood alongside other commercial buildings until Penlon moved and the area behind became ‘Penlon Place’.

After redevelopment it could become ‘Lib-Dem Place’ if previous usage counts.
