Group Litter Pick by the River Thames

There was a group litter pick by the River Thames this morning. About fifty volunteers took part. It was organised by AbiBinit!.

Group litter picks get a lot of attention and make people curious. (Follow the link AbiBinit! if you want to find how to get involved).The Mayor took part and then cycled away to pick up the chain for this group picture.

Helen, who organised the event, said it started over five years ago. When she first went out people laughed at her, but they are not laughing now. People get used to seeing people picking litter.

There are individuals who do their own litter picking of their own locality and Abibinit have an interactive map showing some of locations. For example Mike does Audlett Drive almost every week.

The group litter pick involved people in canoes picking rubbish from the water ways.

Also down at the lock, some new fence work, made from coppiced willows, has been weaved in the last week – behind the bug house.

Manufacturers across the world have reported a rise in demand for the Ukrainian flag since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24th.

VWHDC looking again at the Charter, Abbey House, and Upper Reaches in 2022

Vale of White Horse District Council (VWHDC) has announced a regeneration review for central Abingdon to identify realistic options for three properties the council owns in the town centre:

* the Charter area and car park

* Abbey House

* Upper Reaches Hotel.

They are talking with businesses and community groups this spring. They will do a survey and town centre event for the public in the summer. A report, to identify what future improvements are needed, will be published later this year. This will happen alongside the development of the Neighbourhood Plan which is also looking at the future of central Abingdon.

Currently The Charter car park is subject to urgent and long-term repairs as the upper floors are currently closed. Abbey House is currently being leased by Oxfordshire County Council for office space. The Upper Reaches Hotel is on a very long lease to a third party and has been closed for a number of years.
