Revamp at Abingdon Library – Children’s Area

Abingdon Library Children's Area
The children’s area of Abingdon Library will be closed from 10th-12th March 2015 for a revamp.

I have heard that Wally will no longer be so prominent,
Abingdon Library Children's Area
and the fish tank is to be replaced with something smaller.

All shall be revealed by this time next week!

The children’s part of the library is doing very well with attendance well up on a year ago, whereas other libraries have seen a decline. So this revamp is very well deserved.

St Nicolas Makeover Proposals

Thanks to Julia for letting me know that St Nicolas Church (in the Market Place) are proposing to swap the pews for flexible seating …
St Nicolas Makeover Proposals
So now is the time for the people of Abingdon to say whether they agree or not.

The church has been at the centre of life in the town for 850 years. Church members want to make it more available for use by the community, while maintaining its primary function as a Christian church. Details of the proposed changes and a questionnaire for comments can be found in the church or on the website (www.stnicolasofabingdon.org.uk)
St Nicolas Makeover Proposals
The church is normally open on weekdays from 10-1.00 so please go in to discuss the ideas over a cup of coffee, or phone 01235 536343.
St Nicolas Makeover Proposals
St Nicolas Church was also open this evening for the ABCD Film Club Annual Silent Classic. This year it was Sparrows starring Mary Pickford from 1926 – accompanied on piano by Andrew Youdell.

Beacon Peaceful School

Beacon Peaceful School
Carswell Community Primary School was presented with an award on 27 February 2015 for promoting peace, and is only the fifth school to be recognised as a Beacon Peaceful School.

The people giving the award said “The school is noteworthy for its vibrant, dynamic look and feel. Highlights include: the Head Teacher’s commitment to ensuring that staff aren’t stressed. The school works in partnership with a local project that supports schools, Trinity Learning, and together they have developed a sensory garden. Other noteworthy features include the very cosy nurture room and their play-based curriculum to age 6. Pupils have developed the THINK approach to communication (see photo above) …”

New Optician and Save our NHS campaign

Boots Optician
Boots Opticians opened just over a week ago in Bury Street. That brings the number of opticians in Bury Street to four – so it is quite a centre of excellence.
Save our NHS
Also on Saturday I spotted a group of people on the Market Place with a ‘Save The NHS’ petition. They want:
• To put a stop to privatisation of the NHS
• Make sure it has the funding it needs to provide high-quality healthcare
• Protect it from US health corporations by keeping the NHS out of the TTIP trade deal with America

The petition is also online: www.38degrees.org.uk/nhs.
