Abingdon Naturalists Society 50th Anniversary

Thanks to Michael for this report ….
Abingdon Naturalists Society
The Abingdon Naturalists Society 50th Anniversary party was held at Coseners House on Saturday, July 8th.

The Society was formed in May 1967 after the founder members attended a WEA (Workers Educational Association) course in natural history. About 60 past and present members came and there was much reminiscing and looking at photos from days gone by.

My wife Eliso Bloom made an amazing cake with swans (the society logo), a pond with ducks, snakes, flowers etc. It was cut by our President, Richard Lewington, a wildlife artist who has illustrated many books particularly on butterflies and moths.

New flagpole on the County Hall roof

New Flag Pole
There was a road closure early this morning to allow Ecclesiastic Steeplejack Ltd to install the new flagpole on the County Hall in Abingdon
New Flag Pole
The old pole had been shortened – to cut out the rot, resulting in flags being buffeted against the guy wires. The new timber pole is back to the original length of 6.7 meters.
New Flag Pole
It is finished in white marine gloss paint which will last for many years to come.
New Flag Pole
In this picture the new pole can be seen balanced across the walls at the top of the staircase as the giant cherry-picker brings the steeplejacks safely back to earth.
New Flag Pole
The new flagpole is now held in position by four guy wires – all ready for whatever flags the Town Council’s policy allows to be flown, and whatever winds buffet the flags.

Abingdon Antiques and Vintage Fair

Abingdon Antiques and Vintage Fair
There were MGs on the Market Place today as part of the Abingdon Antiques and Vintage Fair that took place mostly along Bath Street.
Abingdon Antiques and Vintage Fair
Art and Stuff was joined by other stalls selling antiques and nostalgia and some selling craft things and food.
Abingdon Antiques and Vintage Fair
When I walked through, a musician at the Square was singing a Jimi Hendrix song – reminiscent of the Summer of Love 50 years ago.

Bath Street was closed to traffic for the duration, and the sun shone on the fair, which had about fifteen stalls.

New Green Box in the Back Street

New Green Box
Work is progressing well on changing St Edmund House from offices to flats, and during the process the roads near us on West St Helen Street – formerly known as the Back Street, have been dug up to connect the flats with water and sewerage.
New Green Box
The road has also been dug up further down, and a new green cabinet installed to connect more telephone and superfast broadband lines.
New Green Box
The old green box bulged with so many multi-coloured cables that it was a wonder BT engineers could ever disentangle them to get them to the correct property.
