There were MGs on the Market Place today as part of the Abingdon Antiques and Vintage Fair that took place mostly along Bath Street.
Art and Stuff was joined by other stalls selling antiques and nostalgia and some selling craft things and food.
When I walked through, a musician at the Square was singing a Jimi Hendrix song – reminiscent of the Summer of Love 50 years ago.
Bath Street was closed to traffic for the duration, and the sun shone on the fair, which had about fifteen stalls.
Great idea. I remember saying 15 years ago that Abingdon’s history, heritage and location made it an ideal site for antique shops, and that the town (being so close to Oxford) would struggle to be a big chain high street, but could attract a significant footfall of people looking for stuff like antiques and art. A bit like Henley.
Yes – well done to the BID team for putting it on – lots of people (including regulars on this blog!) have been asking for something like that for years, so I hope they enjoyed it and that it can become a regular feature of our sumer calendar.
It is a great idea (of mine, and others’)…alas, i didn’t realise it was on.
I knew i should have googled “antique fairs, on Bath street, Abingdon this week”…
Next time, perhaps.
Daniel, if you can bring yourself to look online, check out either http://www.abingdon.gov.uk/events or http://www.visitabingdon.co.uk/ and you will find all sorts of things going on. Better still, follow them on Facebook or Twitter. If you prefer to stick with paper, pick up a copy of the Abingdon Events Diary (blue and yellow leaflet which came through your door a few months ago, but is widely available around town) and you will see the major events for the year – but not smaller ones or those arranged at short notice. Or look at good old-fashioned posters!
Great idea, well done, shut Bath Street to traffic every weekend. It could really be the start of something I hope.
