Easter Sunrise over the Thames at Abingdon

On Wednesday we went to a funeral at the same church where we were married. All the statues were covered with purple cloths and the lights were low. The 2021 Easter candle was lit for the last time. The Priest said that on Good Friday all ornaments would be removed and the candle extinguished. But on Sunday lights would be on, the statues uncovered, and the church would be decorated with flowers to represent the resurrection.

I walked by the Thames early this morning.

The sun rose soon after 6 am.

It is now 7:50 am and the bells of St Helen’s Church are ringing for the 8 am service.

Happy Easter!

Farmers Market and Good Friday Procession

. T
Today was the warmest day of the year so far, and the town centre of Abingdon was busy. The Farmer’s Market saw more trade than usual, it being Good Friday – a bank holiday.

At 11:45 members from the Church in Abingdon met near the library, and after a short prayer processed behind a wooden cross to the Market Place.

At the Market Place they sang a well known Easter Hymn.

They then continued to St Nicolas Church for a service led by Deacon Selina Nisbett, to hear the first part of the Easter Story, The Crucifixion of Jesus.

Here are short extracts from the parade with the singing of ‘When I survey the wondrous cross’ and ‘My song is love unknown’.

Quilts and Appeal

There was a quilt exhibition last weekend at The Manor Prep School, raising funds for The Abingdon Bridge and Flexicare, and showing quilts made during Covid. There are still a couple of quilts showing in the window of Mostly Books.

There is often somebody in town to do with the Ukraine appeal. That war continues to devastate many ordinary Ukrainian people. 11 million people – over 1/4 of the population – have fled their homes since the conflict began.

Nearly every Monday

Nearly every Monday there is a Market on the Market Place in Abingdon and today was just such a Monday.

There was a fish stall and bakery,

a butcher,

a large plant and flower stall,

best bananas on the fruit and veg stall,
and on the paper stall: quality gift paper, puzzle books, notebooks, and cards for many occasions including Easter.

That is just a small part of the market. You have to visit it yourself to see the full range. Next Monday is Easter Bank Holiday and will be one of those Mondays when there is no market.
