125th Anniversary Architecture Competitions

In the Community Shop West Waddy ADP, the Architects, are exhibiting the results of two competitions.
New Shop Front
Students of Abingdon’s schools were asked to ‘devise imaginative new shop-fronts and signage to improve the legibility and identity of the town’s retail environment.’ The winning entry was a new shop front for Mostly Books created by Grace Edge from St Helen and Katherine School. Mark from Mostly Books was very pleased with the design.

On the other side were entries to a competition for students at Brookes University to assess the key issues necessary to improve connectivity between Abingdon town and the river Thames.

The competitions are part of the West Waddy 125th Anniversary celebrations.

There is a trophy in the window of Patisserie Pascal to mark their winning of the best window on Extravaganza evening.

Mostly Books took second place this year.

If I had been at all involved in the judging I would have given a prize for the roaring fire in the window of the Nursery Shop. It uses a VDU screen with fire surround.

Best window could have gone to this residence in East St Helen Street.

South Abingdon Lights 2010

Back in Abingdon and I took a tour of South Abingdon to look at some of the Christmas Lights. I did not get round to everywhere by a long way and will also look round North Abingdon for the blog fairly soon.

To my mind this was the best neighbourhood display – four houses that coordinated well. The rest of the road was also well lit up in parts.

I took about twenty pictures on the tour, put the results on the computer, and this looked the best picture to me.
