The Abingdon Sea Cadets have been awarded a Burgee – the highest level award for a Sea Cadets Corps Unit. It is in recognition of the continued commitment and hard work of Volunteers and Cadets. Not only are they a highly efficient unit but they also give youngsters many opportunities to try out new activities and earn qualifications.

There was Opera in Abingdon tonight to celebrate forty years of Abingdon being twinned with Lucca – a beautiful Tuscan City. Silvana Froli came all the way from Lucca to perform.
Michael Matthews was the Mayor of Abingdon at the first ever Abingdon-Lucca twinning ceremony – forty years ago. He is still very involved with the twinning society in 2012.
At his initial meeting with the Mayor of Lucca forty years ago he was asked whether Abingdon had an Opera House.
This evening the Amey Theatre, at Abingdon School, served as The Abingdon Opera House.
The river is currently red-flagged and boats are staying put.
Today’s sunshine would have been brilliant for the Dragon Boat racing, but the river is just too high and dangerous and so the Dragon Boat Racing has been postponed to a date later in the year. White water rafting would have been more appropriate up near the weir.
The ground also would have been too soft to drive across without the aid of tractors.
I look forward to seeing the Dragon Boats back on September 9th – which I believe is the revised date.
There was a lot going on down at Abingdon Rugby Club as the club celebrated eighty years with a very well organised day combining rugby, competitions, fun for the family, a reunion for past players, music, and a beer festival.
On previous visits I have noticed the ground can get very damp after rain but that problem seems to be solved now. There were no mud splattered players.
Abingdon Rugby Club have been playing at Southern Town Park since 1989, and in recent years have developed a very successful youth program, with lots of youngsters and their parents at the club on Sunday Mornings.
Good to see the seniors for a change, but I wish I could understand the rules.
