Abingdon Community Hospital becomes a victim of its own success

Community Hospital Parking
Mr Tim Oates, from North Abingdon, brought a neighbour to Abingdon Community Hospital, but could not find a parking place and so parked at the trading estate, nearby. Other people have parked on the grass and possibly in spaces allotted to Marcham Road Health Centre – alongside.

There is a petition in the waiting room at Marcham Road Health Centre asking for the organisation running the hospital (namely Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust) to find a solution to the parking problems so that people going to the Health Centre can use their alloted parking places.

It is good to see the Community Hospital thriving even if it has become a victim of its own success.

I was there this afternoon and very lucky to get a space. There is plenty of space around the grounds to extend the parking. Its a shame to loose the landscaping but there is a vast space to the rear. That said, tarmac isnt cheap!

I’m sure it has a lot more to do with planning permission, and the number of spaces allowed on site, than whether there is a bit of space that could be tarmacked over…

Just be glad you aren’t getting clamped for not parking in a marked bay !

I’m so glad for the little Heyfordian bus service. I catch it from North Abingdon to the Health Centre which means I don’t get the extra stress of trying to find a parking space!

So many cars parking, but with all the buildings in use.
not surprised. Outpatients and XRay, Mental Health and the Health Centre/Out of hours unit.as well as 2 Cottage Hospital units.

They were always going to streamline things and reduce the number of outbuildings and increase parking.

I suppose there is no money for a Parking attendant, the fear is the addition of a barrier and pay for parking?? if things don’t get improved.

Abingdon Hospital is needed. I have been rushed their more than once with an acute asthma attack. Parking is dreadful and having the G P surgery there has made it worse. The only solution is to park at Tesco and walk through but we have to drive in to the hospital to see if a space is available first. I do not see how having barriers and paying for parking would make the situation any better as people have visit the hospital.

I didn’t ever say Abingdon Hospital isn’t needed.

Way back in 2002, We (Mum and myself) spent a lot of time there in the wards 1 and 2 with my late father..

I spent a while Outpatients of the Mental Health Centre….
and the podiatry centre with Mum…

Even back then staff had problems parking, as well as visitors/out patients appointments. They did remove some of the garden & landscaping to make spaces available. and tried to think of ways to resolve the matter.

They even did a survey try and compile a timetable had limited time spaces. (but with nobody to ‘police it’ very difficult).

Worst case scenario is a private company along with clamping/barriers or tickets as they operate in all the other hospitals in Oxford…..

Janet says parking is dreadful and having the GP surgery there has made it worse? The surgery has been there since I lived in Abingdon in the 1980’s when it was in a terrapin hut (and no doubt it was there long before I arrived). The car park then was fine, with masses of spaces. I think you may find it has something to do with more houses being built = more people needing to register.

Lets hope those extra 160 houses don’t get built off Drayton Road or we’ll end up parking near Argos!! Just goes to show the infrastructure can’t cope with the housing boom.
