The Olympic Rings in Abingdon

The Olympic Rings
On the Roundabout near Lodge Hill in Abingdon, drivers coming from Oxford are greeted by a floral  representation of The Olympic Rings. When that symbol was originally designed, in 1914,  those five colours appeared on all the national flags of the world.

Less than 24 hours before the opening ceremony and I have been wondering if we could go one better …
The Olympic Rings
With a touch of paint Abingdon Water Treatment Works could make an Olympic Symbol that could be seen from outer space.

Allegedly the coucil does have the relevant permissions, give them a pot of paint each and get cracking……

actually who’d have thought it but Abingdon went one better and got itself into the Olympic opening ceremony. Did anyone else notice that in the opening scene of the video of the flyover of the Thames from its source to the olympic stadium there was a shot of the Thames at Abingdon starting at the weir, flying over it to the old gaol then following the river to the south until Didcot power station came into view before cutting out. Probably less than a second and a half in total but clearly recogniseable to locals!

Love the usage of the water treatment plant… if only someone would take the initiative and actually do it! Perhaps we could petition the council?
