A new cafe / sandwich / bun shop is opening later this month in the shadows of the County Hall from where they throw the buns as part of the time honoured Abingdon tradition. See World of Buns for a Bun Throwing Timeline.
I guess the next official Bun Throwing is likely to be in 2012 when we celebrate The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Perhaps there will be some unofficial bun throwing in the new cafe on opening day. The Mayor will be there.
This was once Escapade, that gift shop with the incense and rings… and up a few stairs… the second hand books, greeting cards, and party games in tins.
great name. I wish the place every success
Just what Abingdon needs – another sandwich shop!
Monty Pythonesque!
Will they open before 9? If not, then I second Martin Gulliver’s sentiment.
Martin Giulliver, I disagree (for what it’s worth…which probably isn’t much!) this i sjust what Abingdon needs – more vibrant, friendly independant ‘shops’…or indeed as this is, I believe a traditional coffee house.
The thing unfortunatly that Abingdon DOES need – but doesn’t have, is something on or around the Marketplace that is the ‘draw’ for people….I’m afraid a couple of hours of dancing, or a few recycling stands really isn’t good enough. Don’t get me wrong, these events are indeedd wonderful and useful and interesting…but if thsi is ‘all’ that Abingdon Marketplace has to offer on a Bank holiday weekend…then that is bad.
If the Marketplace gets it ‘right’…the people will come to Town. When the people are here, then there’s enough footfall for all the tea rooms and coffee houses.
Lets see what plans are afoot for the marketplace…and hope…
Do you have any positions available?
Best coffee in Abingdon – by far!
What a fantastic shop name in Abingdon.
I heard from my brother (who still lives in Abingdon) that he saw the Mayor being photographed with a bun yesterday! Perhaps there will be a Bun Throwing to celebrate the next Royal marriage.
I’ll have to check out Throwing Buns on my next visit home. I used to work next door to the old Escapade shop, when it was Modulations/Tandy, and then Sandman 🙂
Keep up with the great blogging.
Cheers,
Richard
Looking forward to the event for Carers Week being held in the Market Square on Thursday 16th June, 10-3.
Carers Oxfordshire, Oxfordshire Carers Forum, South and Vale Carers Centre and Throwing Buns will be supporting carers and thanking anyone who is looking after someone for providing support in the community.
There will be small charities and Throwing Buns trying to support the community. A very worthy cause.
The event will provide information, freebies and discounted tea and coffee for carers. I hope the information reaches as many people as possible.
See you there,
Valerie
