The biggest change to the Abbey shopping centre happening this year will be the demolition of 5 units and the erection of 2 larger two-storey shops in their place. The new shops will stretch back to the road and be as deep as the Co-op (ex Somerfields). Looking at the picture above the dark Dream Doors van will be inside one of the new shops. (I had not quite taken that in until today talking to NC).

Unit 29 will be demolished (was Abingdon Gift Centre until moved). Unit 30 will be demolished (was West End news until moved)

Unit 31 will be demolished. Unit 32 will be demolished (and so YMCA will move).

Unit 33 will be demolished (currently a temporary let to Calendar Club but was once Stead and Simpson). Unit 34 will stay and be refurbished (vacated by The Lemon Plaice anyway).
I wonder who they will find as tenants for these two much larger units?
At a guess i’d say a pound shop.
times change – you can’t freeze shops – they either reflect what people want or dissapear.
i dare say abingdon town centre in 1950 looked nothing like it did in 1850 – once upon a time you had to shop near where you live – that’s no longer the case – internet and cars make a world of difference.
I believe swip are hoping to attract fashion retailers but of course they’re unlikely to announce anything until commercial deals are completed. I think the preponderance of pound shops is partly due to recent leases being short term as swip couldn’t offer longer leases due to pending redevelopments. That’s certainly why we’ve had short leases of the old woollies first to cargo then to poundland.
I believe that 1 contract has been agreed, if not already signed & they are close to agreeing the other contract.
Sounds good – are you able to say who?
Rumours, that Poundland will move, and Morrisons moving into Abingdon??.
Gone very quiet with regards to the Charter and the planned supermarket?.
Colin – the last Vale press release re the Charter etc siad there would be a public consultation on proposals for the redevelopment of the Charter area in the Spring, with a formal planning application to follow in the Autumn. So we should see something soon…
Blimey! The Lemon Plaice has closed down! That’s been there for years!
Great news that Abingdon’s shopping precinct is getting a refurb though! It’s about time.
Somebody necessarily help to make seriously posts I might state. That is the first time I frequented your web page and up to now? I surprised with the research you made to create this actual put up amazing. Great job!
