Last night there were three quizzes I knew about in the town centre. There was the special Mayor of Abingdon’s Charity Quiz Evening.
There was a Quiz and Auction at this venue which raised hundreds of pounds for Children in Need. There will also be a hot dog eating competition at 8:30 tonight and raffle – also for Children in Need.
And there was the usual Thursday night quiz starting at 9 PM at this recently refurbished venue by the Rover Thames.
Name the venues …
The Old Anchor.
Guildhall, Kings Head & Bell, Old Anchor.
Go on then Backstreeter, which one did you go to and how did you do?
Love your picture of the Old Anchor. I bet I know which Quiz night you didn’t go to.
Nothing to do with the quiz nights but I noticed today that The Plough is now called The Harp? Does anyone know if it’s reverted back to an earlier name or is it just a modern name change?
the KHB quiz last night was a cracker. My team (of which Backstreeter was a part) won a round.
Did they renovate the back room? I was one of the number of people who lobbied to have the one area at the back room saved. I hope (but fear) it has gone? Please someone give me good news
I like your caption underneath the photo … ‘Rover Thames’ ….. must be Harry’s favourite place 🙂
A lot of the letters have come off this keyboard so it is very easy to make mistakes.
The kings head and bell does one every thursday as well.
Re native’s comment – no.4 above – a quick check in Jackie Smith’s invaluable “Inns and Alehouses of Abingdon” shows that the Plough has been on its present site since 1888 (previously it was elsewhwere in what is now Station Yard) and no mention of any earlier name.
Thank you Hester. I guess I should have had a look myself as I too own a copy and yes I agree it is invaluable to anyone with an interest in Abingdon.
I’m glad the Anchor quiz is back on a Thursday. the King’s Head was a bit overcrowded while the Anchor was closed.
