Maybe before the roads are open again the Council, or whoever, would like to clear the leaves from the pavements facing Wilsham Road. They are a downright hazard to the many people who live in the retirements flats along Mill Paddock, especially when it rains.

We have similar challenges up where I live too. I raised it with the vale dc who are responsible for sweeping pavements and the pavements around Abingdon are supposed to be swept every 6-8 weeks which can obviously be quite a big gap at this time of year in tree-eg areas. If you need to nudge them along towards your road, the officer responsible is a very helpful person called Ian Matton.

Things can’t be too bad around town at the moment if falling leaves are such an issue! What are the poor guys supposed to do about it. Look up at the tree’s they still have half their leaves on them would there be any point in sweeping them up when in an hour or so the path will be just as bad as before? I know they get slippy but im sure they will be cleared at some point soon. Next we will be asking the council to stop it being so windy or to maybe clear the rain away! Let nature take its course.

Native,It is not an issue about the falling leaves – it only becomes an issue when old people slip and break a limb, especially when the leaves have never been cleared in the first place and are piling up on the pavement. I’m a very agile 71 year old, but I have slipped a few times in the past few weeks, and if I do break anything I will most definitly sue the Council, as I have phoned regarding this matter. By the way, sarcasm is the lowest form of wit!!!

I understand that you could slip and fall over and of course that wouldnt be very nice. All im saying is I think weve all got a bit used to expecting other people to look out for our own well being instead of looking out for ourselves, not to mention always wanting to blame somebody for our own miss fortunes. We could slip on ice the same as on leaves and im pointing out that its all just natures way. I dont know how parish councils out in the countryside deal with leaves? Maybe they are just left to blow and rot away? Which I dont think is unreasonable especially with all of the current cut backs that are being made all over.

I’m happy to report my prayers were answered. The leaves that have caused me “so much worry” were swept away yesterday. I hope my phone calls to the Council did the trick, but who knows!!!

Missing the point of the pictures I think. They finally got around to properly resurfacing the road approaching the bridge. It had so many patches on it was like my grandad’s old socks, more darned than original. Can now pedal my bike over there without risk of bouncing clean out the saddle.

Perhaps the council could employ some out of work youth to stand by ready with a butterfly net to catch each leaf as it falls…. they could call it an “installation” as part of some sort of never ending art week an get a grant… ;O)
