The scaffolding – in place since Easter – has been removed from 30-32 Stert Street and once again it’s easy to see and get inside the Oxfam shop.
Although the cleaning of the lower part of the building is still to do, the upper part of the building looks transformed after renovation and cleaning.
WOW! That looks fantastic and im sure its going to look stunning when the lower part is finished. I wonder what the CB stands for on that centre stone?
I don’t know about CB, but what iI do know is that Langfords Coal and Corn merchants whose name is above the door were there from aroun 1908/9 until the early 1970s. Before then it was Charles Williams greengrocer – he was there in 1903, don’t know about earlier than that. After Langfords came Deaneys Regency House Furniture till about 1983. Then the Extraordinary trading Company which i remember – it was a brilliant shop selling lovely kitchenware. oxfam have been there since around 1987.
I am sure some of the real historians around the town can add more..
I also remember the Extraordinary Trading Company, a very good shop, I seem to remember it was going for some time
I’ve always thought this was a beautiful building with lots of history.
A beautiful building. I’d like to think the council will look to build the new shopping centre with this much character in it’s architecture.
Budget permitting of course!
🙂
Hopefully it will be Scottish Widows that are doing the building! Not sure that I want to see £53m added to my council tax.
This is a great building to momentarily look at and appreciate whilst stuck in the traffic jams on Stert Street
presumably when it was built it looked rather modern – maybe people complained that it looked nothing like what it replaced – such is life….
How did I miss this yesterday – what a difference. It is so nice to see these building beautifully restored.
