Long Distance Bible Reading in Abingdon

I see in the Abingdon Herald, and now on BBC Local, that as part of Christ Church’s 50th anniversary celebrations the bible is being read aloud in 4 days. Many people are taking part including our Mayor, MP and Bishop, and lots of people who go to Christ Church.
Long Distance Bible Reading
This feat has been attempted before in Abingdon. That was back in September 2003, at Trinity Church.
Long Distance Bible Reading
On that occasion one young lad attempted to read through the bible in 24 hours.

It quickly became apparent that 24 hours would never be long enough. The going got tough as he entered the books of I and II Chronicles – where there were long lists of people begetting other people with no other narrative.

At that point the audience of young friends started drifting away, and the young reader jumped forward a few pages to something more interesting. He then started taking requests. The highlight turned out to be the Song of Songs with piano accompaniment.

I look forward to going down to Christ Church to listen for a bit. I’m sure there will be no skipping any difficult passages there – and 4 days sounds more possible.

We were at Phab Club yesterday for our 26th Birthday Party, well worth a visit to see their celebration of the King James Bible, in its different forms.

In the church they have a fantastic display, to see, as well as listen to the readings.

Been dipping into and out of this for the last two days, in between shifts in the taxi. You should come and have a look for yourself, mate: a lot of effort has been put into this project and it shows. The audio feed from the reader is fed into the foyer of the building as soon as you enter, so it hits you straight away.

There are tons of informative displays on the Bible in different languages, a quiet area and what I would call good Christian hospitality, without being too over bearing.

That there is a variety of readers and styles from the deep soniferous tones of the Bishop of Reading, to the young people and the more mature in their congregation, only adds to the experience. Should now be somewhere around Ezekiel, they’ve even been entirely welcoming to me, as a stranger to their church and mine and my wife’s offer to help them keep going through the night. So, we’re on at 0300 – maybe around Luke or John’s gospels – from The Stickies to The Word of God, life doesn’t get more exciting this side of Heaven

It’s a great adventure and God Bless the good people of Christ Church Abingdon for having the gumption to put it on.
