Getting Community Payback working in Abingdon

Old Gaol
There was a letter in the Abingdon Herald this morning complaining that the Community Payback scheme is taking a very long time to paint the Wilsham Road fence.

For things to move forward again accomodation is needed nearby on a Saturday for the use of the workers (with toilets, washing, changing facilities). If anybody knows of such a building it would allow painting to continue. On Sundays a building was available, but for unknown reasons the day was changed to Saturday.

If it were council workers or contractors painting the fence would they have toilets, washing, changing, rest room and a kettle nearby? Shame things like that get in the way of a great scheme like this. Are they locals who are doing the work? I hope so as even though its no great project they may feel a bit of pride or some kind of ownership over something they see most days that everyone can benefit from. What a good idea that is.

Very good point Native. They should be grateful they are not in chains let alone very pink and fluffy facilities!!! Too soft as usual!!!

When they’ve finished they should come and clean out the drainage ditches around the back of the Rugby pitches. It’s no wonder Abingdon flooded recently, with basic maintenance being ignored!

This is not run by the council but organised by an unpaid local volunteer trying to make things happen locally using people serving time on Community Payback. St John’s will be asked as will some others. The problem is the red tape somebody like that has to get round with government agencies to make things happen.
