The Town Crier was there to announce the Local Excellence Market in town today.

The event usually comes around on the fifth Saturday, when there is one, with local, independent stalls, and sociable people. Around 25 stalls filled the square.

Visitors could buy everything from hot food and bread to cakes, pies, crafts and gifts from local producers. There were spells of sunshine, no rain, and little wind.

Alongside the market was the launch of the new What’s Happening Abingdon, Spring – Summer 2026, produced by the Abingdon Events Partnership, who also organise the market.
whilst the market maybe good, the vast majority of stalls are NOT LOCAL, yet they keep advertising as such
That depends on your definition of local. Nobody has ever claimed they are all Abingdon based. Either way they provide a service, it helps small businesses and brings people into the town.
Does anyone remember the “French produce” markets?
Pascals – our fantastic French patisserie wasn’t allowed to sell his French pastries – made with French ingredients, to French recipes by a Frenchman
but…
You could buy a plastic Eiffel Tower made in China bought over from France and sold on a French souvenir stall. 😂
Fun times.
I don’t know the story behind Pascal’s, but guessing it was before the current organisers. Nowadays the plastic Eiffel tower scenario would not happen at this market.
As far as I know, the much-missed Pascal’s closed because the owners split up. Nothing to with them “not being allowed” to sell their products.
I also remember the occasional French markets, and very good they were too. As I recall it was mostly food, drink etc. with some jewellery and clothing. I certainly don’t recall any plastic Eiffel Towers or anything of that ilk.
The point being?
Just speculating; maybe Pascals missed out in the patriotic anti-European Brexit backlash?
