The Old Anchor’s return

The Old Anchor Inn has reopened. The “To Let” sign has gone, and the much-loved riverside pub is back in use. Sitting by the Thames, the Old Anchor is a familiar sight in paintings and photographs, and its return is good news for Abingdon.

Well worth popping in to raise a glass to the Old Anchor’s return.

On the first evening, the pub was packed, and the new landlord was pleased to see so many people. To encourage local custom, there’s an offer of 10% off food and drink for anyone living within three miles who signs up to the loyalty scheme.

At the moment, it’s drinks only, but a meal wagon will be arriving soon, and the kitchen will follow. The back room and garden are open, and well decorated, and the pub felt much bigger than I remembered.

I do hope this goes well; it’s a great setting and it has been a shame to see closed for so long. Good luck to the new landlord and the team.

This is fantastic news. I visited on Friday and received a very warm welcome, which gives me confidence that it will be a success. In my view, however, the pub would benefit from offering a wider range of cask ales. For a pub company such as Cask and Crew, Why limit to only Greene King beer. I would recommend introducing additional cask ale options. Otherwise great pub.

You’re absolutely right. GK beer isn’t great at the best of times, and after shutting Morland a lot of Abingdonians don’t want to drink it.
There’s Loose Cannon, Love Beer, Tap Social and Amwell Springs which are all local breweries that offer decent beer. I hope that they at least get a decent guest beer in and make a success of it. It’s a lovely pub in a nice setting and I wish them well 👍

Something from Loose Cannon would be a welcome add. Also a good cider for people who aren’t beer drinkers. (Not Strongbow)
