Bank Holiday Walks and Market

On Bank Holiday Monday, a series of walks were organised by The Friends of Abingdon Civic Society. Five were guided, and there were ten themed trail leaflets.

The Friends had their AGM last Wednesday at the same time as the Town Council cinema meeting. In the last year, the Friends have organised Heritage Open Day, and walk days like today. They also have a project to produce a photographic archive of the town. They were active in looking at planning applications and notifying both the town and district council of concerns. They are involved in the Conservation Area Appraisal for the Albert Park area, and the Abingdon neighborhood plan. They also act as a pressure group on major issues and have worked with local residents to press the District Council to resolve problems over the derelict Upper Reaches hotel site.

Most of the Monday Market was also on the Market Place despite it being a bank holiday.

It was great to see so many people out enjoying the walks yesterday. For those who missed them, the attractive and easy-to-use leaflets can be found on the Civic Society website at https://abingdoncivicsociety.org.uk/activities/abingdon-walks/
We will be running guided walks again at Heritage Weekend on 17 September- including some new ones – so note the date and keep an eye out for details nearer the time.
We would welcome more people to help us with our other projects – or just to join and keep in touch with what we are doing. Check out the rest of our website, or get in touch.

But I understand that the very-helpful, very-friendly, and very-efficient curator, Meg, has been dismissed by the Abbey Buildings Trust, and that they hope that a temporary employee on a zero hours contract can somehow open/close the venue before/after events. Perhaps a Trustee could tell us, the residents of Abingdon (and potential users of these wonderful buildings), exactly what is happening and what their short and long-term plans are ?

This is not correct. Meg resigned last year and trustees have been working hard to try and fund a non-residential post for Meg as we were keen for her to stay on. In the end we could not find the funding required so we agreed to part company on friendly terms.
