Coronation Street

East St Helen Street residents decorated their road on Saturday in preparation for the coronation.

It looks very colourful.

Sorry to hijack an article about preparation for the coronation but we have been contacted by the Abbey cinema saying that the council seem to be putting all sorts of conditions in place that would make it extremely difficult for them to continue.
The Abbey cinema is popular and well used and is a great asset to the town,
What is wrong with this council ?

Welcome Hijack. I look forward to seeing THE UNLIKELY PILGRIMAGE OF HAROLD FRY next week at the Abbey Cinema, and I have seen the worrying Abbey Cinema email.

The length of time it has taken the Town Council to sort out this contract is embarrassing I’m afraid. It’s the elections tomorrow and I hope we’ll end up with some decisive Councillors.

The Councillors I’ve spoken to on this matter all seem supportive of keeping the cinema, but seem insufficiently commercially minded to take the decisions necessary to do a deal. The cinema is a fantastic asset for the town and the council must crack on and make a deal in the public interest. We all remember the closed and unused Guildhall that went before.

It would be good to hear the Council’s side of this, but the elections make that impossible at present. There is a round of Council meetings in early June so we will have an opportunity to ask them then. They will no doubt say that some of the issues are commercially confidential, but they should not all be.

Fir what it’s worth, the cinema people have specifically said that they have nothing “commercially sensitive” to with-hold, indeed, as a community resource they are very open about it, as it all should be.

Will be interesting to know what might be commercially sensitive?

Also….can someone remind us who the town council “is”….that way we might know who has let it get “this far”…
