Local Excellence Market

Traders and craftspeople came to Abingdon Market Place for the autumn Local Excellence Market today.

After a two-year absence, the Abingdon Extravaganza will be back on the 26th of November and will have a football theme. In the year when the England Lionesses won Euro 2022, after beating Germany 2-1 in extra-time at Wembley, the extravaganza will be opened by some of the Oxford United Women’s team. The extravaganza format will be the same as in previous years, with a parade, stalls, and entertainment.

The Royal British Legion has launched its annual poppy appeal, and there were traditional poppies and smaller lapel badges, including a Falklands 40 badge. 255 British personnel lost their lives recapturing the Falklands in 1982.

I woul like to warn everyone that pickpockets are very active in Abingdon. The latest victim was a woman with two small children. They go for the elderly an disabled an people with small children as they are most likely to be distracted. I always carry a bag across my should in front of me which is recommended. They are also operating around Waitrose.

speak to the traders in the town when these events are on, takings drop substantially and over half of these market traders are not local

I would disagree. Many shops like the increased footfall, even if people (who may not normally come into the town) are only browsing – they may well return.
All the traders have to come from within a certain radius of Abingdon.

As a regular visitor to this market, it is the only time I come into Abingdon centre. I place an order in advance with one of the stalls & collect on the day. But while I am in the town, I regularly buy a coffee at Java, something I would not do if this market did not take place. I think the variety on offer is excellent (no pun intended!) and considering the cost of everything is on the rise, most stalls are at a very reasonable price. I would imagine that due to all the stalls being local to Abingdon, their fuel costs to attend are low. One stall told me he walks his stock to the market, so he must be very local & by walking reduces his potential carbon footprint.
