This flowerbed was once a fish pond

Elizabeth told me that the flowerbed outside the library was once a fish pond. That was before digital cameras when we did not waste camera film on street furniture. Has anybody got a picture of the pond, or somebody posing by the pond?

This area of the charter, and outside of Poundland, is very popular with school children after school. There is a security guard outside the library in the early evening to help maintain order in the library. But this afternoon it was not children causing problems but two adults.

I used to love the fish … but weren’t they in the semi circular flowerbed in the background of the second photo? There was a lovely pond in Spring Road too. Going down the hill, on the right hand side, there was a low wall in three curved sections. The fish were behind the third swoopy section. We only went that way if we were going to the pink post office. Trips to town usually involved walking through the park and jumping off the plinth …

I so agree with you Janet..the whole of the precinct is a mess..in fairness it is regularly cleared but the youths who congregate in the precinct every evening leave an appalling mess…some of these children are so young they should be under parental care..it is disgusting!

@Lady You mean bring life, vitality and progress? Its already enough of a grey haired brigade town as it is?

So nice of you to tarnish all young people’s reputation and list them as hooligans without acknowledging that the action you claim to witness may be the exception

I have seen plenty of adults who drop litter without a thought. I have also seen people who pick stuff up and take it to the nearest bin.

Abingdon is not unusual in this. We haven’t been a tidy country for decades!

I’m not sure exact!y where the pond was but when it was filled in the fish moved into the library and the council car park staff had to continue looking after them.

There is a security guard in Northcourt Co-op this week. Sad reflection of the times. I have always felt safe in Abingdon x
