Jubilee Excellence Market

The team who organise the Local Excellence Market have been invited to take part in a large event at Abingdon Airfield on 4th June. The event will be a lot more than a market. See https://www.abingdoneventspartnership.co.uk/jubilee-market.

The Town Council are also planning events to celebrate the Queen’s 70th anniversary from Wednesday 1 June to Sunday 5 June 2022 at Rye Farm Meadows in Abingdon.

I don’t know yet when they have the bun throwing.

I understand that the bunthrowing will be on the Sunday evening. Local communities are being encouraged to hold street parties earlier that day. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday there will be a variety of daytime and evening events at Rye Farm Meadow.
I think the Town Council are still welcoming enquiries from groups who would like to lay on an activity, performance or display enquiries@abingdon.gov.uk

Sunday evening isn’t the best time of day for bun throwing. Some people, particularly ex-Abingdonians, travel a long way for this, creating late travel to return home. Members of my family would come for this, but not on a Sunday evening.

@Monagain: no. The Chamber of Commerce is still the chamber. Mushroom Communications, a marketing company based in High Wycombe, has been running and/or providing support to some events in the area for some years – such as the Craft Fair, the ATOM festival, Artweeks, the Abingdon Carousel, the Local Excellence markets… They have now formed the Abingdon Events Partnership to formalise this and aim to take a leading role in taking over the Extravaganza which the Chamber gave up last year.

Just to set the record straight, the Events Partnership has a wider range of experience organising successful Craft Fairs, Atom Festival, Heritage Festival etc. as well as the Local Excellence Markets.

PS Isn’t it weird that those who complain about others not doing anything for the town are the first to snipe when someone does!!!

yes lets move everybody out of abingdon to an airfield, so the town loses out financially and the only benefactors are the events partnership etc, are accounts gonna be produced just like the coc werent.

All the stall holders, crafters, small businesses etc will gain, along with local charities. I second Hester’s comments – and what, monagain, have you contributed? While I accept, and am pleased that the town council are organising events, they could have taken the chance to organise something like this. People are going to flock to the airfield anyway for all the commercial events on the day (not organised by the Abingdon Events Partnership) so why not take advantage of this footfall for small local businesses?
My only concern is the traffic management.

apparently there is going to be 400 stalls so the stallholders will have nothing to do with abingdon celebrations, the town centre will not benefit in anyway. i look forward to seeing financial reports of local charities receiving funds, coc had no public accounts, if your only concern is traffic management, how is that going to help the businesses in the town as the small businesses you mention wont be from abingdon, even the market square excellence market only under fifty per cent are from abingdon, again how does this help abingdon town businesses

Monagain, with all due respect I think you have got the wrong end of the stick here.
The Abingdon Airfield event is a commercial one, nothing to do with Town Council, Chamber or any other public body – as you probably know there are various events of this kind throughout the year. They are run by Xplosive events – a local (South Oxfordshire) company. And by all accounts they are very popular, lots of local people go and enjoy themselves there – so why knock it?
Abingdon Events partnership is also a private company, not funded by local councils, ratepayers, or local businesses. They too are a local business – of the kind you claim to support!
In parallel, the Town Council is organising 4 days of events for the Jubilee, mainly based around Rye Farm – not many details have been published yet, but Abingdon people will have plenty to choose from, in town and outside.

I was about to write exactly what you have written Hester. I think Monagain needs to check his/her facts as he/she is so wrong on this, particularly regarding the stalls and charities. But I can’t be bothered to argue any more – there is clearly some axe to grind here.

          2. monagain

would never support abingdon events , they are the old abingdon coc in disguise ,however whilst there are other abingdon led events, council eg, will happen, you are still removing business out of abingdon so what businesses in abingdon, benefit from this. please advise

I first, and unknowingly walked through Abingdon during bun season. It is certainly the most frightful time of year to outsiders and I can’t so much look at a bun without bracing myself for a collision.

Maybe Monagain should reveal who he is given it’s the same old negative message he’s pedaled for years on this site under lots of different pseudonyms.

Sorry, but why has Monagain lived here so long, (apparenty) if he dislikes it so much?
There are other places to live, which are not nearly as pleasant as Abingdon on Thames. It’s a lovely place to live, not perfect, but then, nowhere is.
