Abbey Fields development – December 2021

Daniel has been filming above the Abbey Fields development north of Dunmore Road in Abingdon and I have taken a couple of stills from his film.

This pictures looks south west towards Tilsley park.

This one looks north east towards Lodge Hill. It is on a larger scale that the Kingsgate development for David Wilson Homes.

Abbey Fields carries the brand Barratt Homes.

Barratt Developments PLC owns three consumer brands: Barratt Homes, David Wilson Homes and Barratt London. From what I can gather David Wilson Homes are for the higher end of the market.

Does anyone know if there is a timescale on the Dunmore Road filter lane (to go up to Lodge Hill) and the rest of the development on that side (opposite Alexander Close), the initial plans showed there is to be a care home, retirement home, pub, shops and a school to be eventually built there.

As usual the local residents have been left in the dark with where everything is at with those, there should be a website outlining what is to be built and when rather than everyone guessing from the building work.

I agree Ste. The Friends of Abingdon Civic Society tries to meet that need by monitoring what is going on and putting a summary on our website https://abingdoncivicsociety.org.uk/planning/large-developments/. It has links to the planning applications where you can see layout plans etc.
I am afraid i don’t know the answer to your question about the filter lane, but your County Councillor might be able to help on that.
Re the next phase of the Abbey Fields development, the developer hasn’t yet put in a planning application for that – it was due pre-lockdown. We have been trying to find out what is going on – will return to the matter in the New Year.

Thank you Hester, I know you and the Civic Society try your hardest and it is acknowledged!

It just stuns me that the biggest development since the Long Furlong estate was built over 30 years ago doesn’t have any sort of regular newsletter, website or any comms from the vale, county councillors, developers or whoever, to keep people regularly informed as to what is being built, when and what sort of disruption to face when things seriously start to pick up with road adjustments and things like Aldi coming on Wootton Road.

The next phase area of the Abbey Fields appears to have movement in terms of diggers moving about the fields and pipes being laid but one can only assume its connected to what is currently being constructed further down the road rather than what will eventually be built there.

No planning applications in is a matter of concern, equally nothing on the Lodge Hill slip roads although heard on the grapevine that won’t be until the New Year either….delay after delay and only trickles of 2nd hand information as usual. So poor from many angles.

Perhaps a condition for planning consent would be for applicants to supply – free of charge and through the door – fortnightly news of how and development is progressing… Developers go (eventually), residents remain.
