After a week away

We are back in Abingdon after a week away. The X2 bus driver at Oxford Station said that a lot of petrol stations in the area have run out of fuel. He put it down to panic buying. The Vineyard Service Station was not selling fuel this morning.

There are signs in the Vineyard warning that the road will be closed on 4th October for the Womens Cycle Tour. The Cycle Tour begins in Oxfordshire on Day 1, starting in Bicester. The race will head south to Culham and Abingdon, then north to finish in Banbury. The route through Abingdon is Bridge Street, Stert Street (wrong way), Stratton Way,  Bath Street, and Wootton Road.

Also on 4th October, Abingdon Street Fair will shut High Street, Ock Street, and part of Stratton way. The signs, this year, make it the Longest Street Fair in the UK – 1½ mile !

11/2 miles be blowed! The OS maps and Google maps both make it just under a kilometre – or 0.62 miles. I could make a joke about not trusting the authors of the poster an inch, but I won’t.

For anyone interested, the ladies bike race is scheduled to be coming up Bridge Street at between 12:15 and 12:29 on Monday, depending on how quickly they’ve covered the 26 miles they’ll have don’e already. They should have passed through Abingdon about three/four minutes after they arrive. By the finish in Banbury they will have done about 92 miles.

Seems utterly bonkers having the bike race on the same day as the fair. Abingdon will be cut off! What about emergency vehicles?

The bike race closure is scheduled to last about 20 minutes – and cover a very limited area. let’s hope that part of Abingdon can last that long without needing emergency services.

Actually, Steve 2, considering the town has so many ‘pinch-points’, exacerbated by the semi-closure of the bridge, i think a lock-down of an hour is pretty good. In addition, Mick, it’s a good idea that the bike rzce is happening at the same time as The Fair as most of the usual through-traffic will be making their usual Fair-time arrangements to avoid comimg through the Town.

Let’s hope some of the schoolkids are taken down to Wooton Road to see the race go passed … seeing a peloton in full flight is much more impressive in real life.
