Aldi Abingdon Consultation

Stuart sent me a link for the Aldi Abingdon Consultation. Aldi would like to establish a new store near the development in North West Abingdon and want people to have their say at https://aldiconsultation.co.uk/abingdon/. It would be a modestly sized food store with parking for 103 cars and 40 jobs.

The proposed site is the top end of the circus field where there was an archaeological dig two weeks ago.

That’s about the size of Tappi Carpets.

Considering the demographic of Abingdon if they opened a proper sized store they’d virtually clean up. A small store though…with a correspondingly smaller offering … I’ll certainly use it now and again but unlikely to change my shopping habits.

It is a shame, Abingdon often gets these ‘token attempts’…

    Still…solar panels etc…

Yes I agree. We could have done with a full sized Aldi. Tesco does not now supply such a wide range of goods as it used to and some of the prices are more than Waitrose. I was surprised to find that some goods were cheaper in Waitrose than Tesco. The more competition the better.

The area marked ‘future allocated housing’ would be perfect for an access road to join the A34 going south (and the opposite side for an exit on the northbound carriageway). This site would serve far more people than the much vaunted Lodge Hill interchange. Just look at a map!
I put this idea to the local liberals years ago, but politicians rarely change their minds, whatever the evidence.

What you’re suggesting there Ab Ithel is an investment in infrastructure…and where’s the profit in that!?

Oh Ab Ithel, you are funny ha, ha, ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha.

No Daniel, I’m not suggesting an investment in infrastructure. I’m suggesting that if an interchange is to be built, then the Wooton road is a better place than Lodge Hill.
What’s with the ha,ha, …..ha? Too subtle for me!

Tesco and Waitrose will feel the arrival of both Lidl and Aldi in town. However, it is good news for locals as the produce pallet is likely to continue continental European items past January 2021.
Prices I am afraid will go up significantly in any case.

A snapshot from today’s Tesco weekly:
    British beef mince 750g £3.56
    4 pint semi milk £1.09
    Dark soy sauce £2.00
    15 mixed size f/r eggs £2.00
    Tesco malt wheats 750g 83p
    Aubergine 70p
    6 Cox apples £1.60

Please can you be specific about the price increase? What constitutes ‘significant’ (these prices fluctuate week-in-week-out anyway). Will it be the same fluctuation or greater? By how much? A penny, or a pound?

“Past January 2021”; is that as of February 1st; or generally over the coming months and years? (Hasn’t everything ‘gone up’ over months and years)?

    Anyway, please clarify….

My favourite yoghurts were cheaper in Waitrose. I use dried herbs and spices. Tesco has stopped selling the refils for these so you have to buy the more expensive bottles. I buy small tins of butter beans but Tesco now only sell the large tins which are more expensive.
