Christmas will be different this year

As we head into Advent, the Churches in Abingdon have teamed up with Abingdon Town Council to promote a community wide sing of the carol Silent Night at 8pm on Thursday 17th December.  There will be a track released closer to the time to sing along with.

Catherine sent me a picture from the Fitzharrys estate to show that they have started a living advent calendar this year.

The countdown begins. Christmas will be different this year. The Christmas story is the same but society has been changed by a virus.

Somewhat surprised to get a letter from Aldi today announcing their new Abingdon-on-Thames store on the circus field between Wootton Road and Copenhagen Drive. That came out of the blue ! We are asked to comment on the proposal.

It is great that there will be a shop within walking distance of the first phase of the new housing developments – and the existing houses along Copenhagen Drive. It is going to be one of their smaller stores, so may not attract hordes of cars-drivers from miles around.
Also, importantly, it finally knocks on the head any idea of houses on that field – the proposals were dreadful and the air and noise pollution for people living there would have been awful. (And yes, I do know we need more affordable houses, but not put in unsafe and unsuitable places)

According to their plans Hester there are houses there. The shop is in the small triangle formed by the A34 and Wootton Road with one end against the A34 bridge. Two thirds of the circus field area is designated ” Future Allocated Housing “. They do look a bit close.

Well spotted, Chris, I had missed that. They may struggle to get approval since the Local Plan provides for 200 on the area the other side of the Wootton Road and this one combined, and the other side now has approval for the full 200, but we will have to keep our eyes open.
Better to keep this space for the circus😀

This is welcome news indeed. Although only a relatively small store it will be great that it will have solar panels on the roof and grey water reclamation.

Any reduction in electrical usage from the grid and flushing loos with pristine drinking water is a good thing when driven by big business. Where they lead, we will surely follow.

Well done Aldi; Every little helps!

And we’ll done planners for making it a zero compromise planning requirement.

I couldn’t see where the trees were being planted to offset the carbon footprint though?
