This picture shows the corner of Broad Street and Queen Street on this wet and windy Sunday morning. It shows the tall side of Peacocks – previously the Somerfield / Co-op supermarket.
The Pied Piper restaurant was on this site – run by Mr and Mrs Gough. They served coffee and cakes and cream teas in the early 1960s. It is a matter of regret that such a fine building was demolished.
This post card (printed for S & S Stationery Co Ltd., Oxford) shows the beamed interior. The previous picture came from Abingdon and surrounding areas facts and history on Facebook. I don’t know where they got it.
Peacocks are to close. Time will tell, what will follow.
So sad that buildings like that were demolished and replaced with buildings of questionable quality.
It’s a pity that the old restaurant building is gone. Nice to see the postcard!
Thank goodness there are still archives of the old photos, I suppose one good thing of modern times, electronic archives…A lot of such buildings demolished to make way for the precinct. An attempt to keep what they now call footfall I suppose… re there now regrets. in these times The Edinburgh Woolen Mill (Parent Company) are closing stores and attempting to go online?? (not confirmed)…
My Nan worked in there for a while in the early sixties, used it quite often, good strawberry ice cream.
